Why the word "standard length" has lost its meaning in golf? What happened to "Standard", which means that all things are the same as you get what you expected? In recent years, this definition has lost its true meaning, and nowhere more evident than in the conductor lengths.
Twenty years ago, the normal length of a driver is 43 inches. Drivers tend to as much as 46 inches! So what does this mean? Think of the drivers are becoming more and people will not get bigger. Twenty years is not long enough for us humans to evolve genetically, even if sometimes we like to think. Secondly, it means that for most golfers hit the streets it becomes increasingly difficult.
So what's driving the golf industry to change the length of drivers could you want? Well, it started with the technology. Titanium and ultra-light graphite shafts two materials that have made this possible. Both lightweight materials has allowed companies to extend the pilots and maintain the same swingweight. But companies like Callaway and TaylorMade have been to another level. Each year golfers are bombarded by advertisements claiming that their business can give a new driver added 15 yards off the tee. Each year, these ads make the same claim, but by my calculations that should hit 500 units now yards. Yes, these drivers can give you a few meters extra off the tee, but most often is what is given back.
