Golf Club Fitting Lie Angle

Magnetic Lie Angle Tool

Magnetic Lie Angle Tool

$19.95

Magnetic Lie Angle Tool Many people simply do not understand why a ball does not go to their intended target when they are playing from an uneven lie with the ball above or below the feet. To demonstrate the change in face angle when elevating or lowering the lie, attach the Magnetic Lie Tool to the face of a short iron. Then demonstrate the direction the pointer faces when the sole is flat on the ground in a horizontal plane as opposed to being tilted forward or back. The visual demonstration is quite revealing. The Magnetic Lie Angle Tool will show: * When the face is square, open or closed. * Where the face is pointing on a side-hill lie. * How a player has to adjust stance or be fitted to keep club lie angle consistent.

golf club fitting lie angle

How should I decide my lie angle?

I want to get new golf clubs for next season and i found some i really like that i can custom fit. I’m 5’8” so my clubs are about the standard length, maybe -1/4″. I need help with fitting the lie angle however. The site says -2, -1, 0, +1, +2 im guessing +2 is what everyone says, “more upright” but im not sure. I’m exactly 30 inches from wrist to floor and the site says i need -1 degree or -2 degree. Everyone says i need to be fitted with a lie board but i’m not a member at a course so that’s not really available. I tend to hit the ball off the toe a lot so what lie angel should i get??

Questions about lie angle can be a difficult to answer as they require detailed information about your swing. I was pleased to see that you at least provided information about your ball striking. As a professional, I believe I can help. Let me explain first the the two ways of fitting for lie angle.

Typically most professionals and retailers fit with a demo iron. Most demo irons are #6 so it makes sense that this is the common denominator.

DEFINITION – The “ie angle of a golf club or club head is the angle between the center of the shaft and the sole. Most golfers refer to this as how the club lies in the turf. Perfect lie angle is when the sole of the golf club at impact is parallel with the ground/turf. Also called square.

Static Fitting – Method used to evaluate the lie angle, club length and shaft by asking questions. Is extremely Important in my opinion should be first. Although not popular due to time the accuracy of the data supplied by the golfer is important. This is the lie angle of a club at address/setup. If a good player/ball striker sets up with a flush lie angle it is likely he/she doesn’t need to have the lie changed. If the lie is toe up the length may need to be adjusted. There is also an outside chance, he/she is setup incorrectly. After this static analysis, the dynamic fitting should follow.

Dynamic Fitting – Is where a player swings a demo iron on a lie board. The club makes a mark on the sole or lie tape on the sole. This mark indicates the players swing path or plane. If a player is steep (outside in) they will make a mark on or near the toe. This will generally create toe heavy divots and these golfers notice more shots struck towards the toe of the club. Generally the fitter will continue to give you a demo which is more upright until you are able to make the mark in the center.

How Length Effects Lie – Frequently if the length is a good fit, then the lie angle should be a good fit if not very close (that is for better players). If you need a shorter club, decreasing the length 1/4″ of 1/2″ should change your lie to be 1* upright, maybe 2* more upright. For those of us who are shorter, a shorter length will help you achieve a better swing and swing plane therefore improving your ball striking.

How Your Swing Effects Your Lie At Impact – If you make a mark on the toe of the sole. A picture at impact, would show your sole to be off the ground and the toe of the club to be striking the ground first. Your lie angle may appear to be too flat. A retailer of professional will likely tell you that you need an upright lie angle. The farther towards toe the mark is, the more upright your lie angle may need to be. Keep in mind that if your clubs are too long, your lie may appear to be way off. Meaning far too upright.

My Opinion – Unless you have an unusual body type like me 5′ 9″ with a 6′ 2″ wing span, I dont believe in bending the lie of a golf club beyond 2* upright/flat. Doing so will only prevent a player from building a better Golf Swing. For me, I was always way too flat. Shortening the length of my irons -1/2″ inch allowed me to be more upright which was where I should be. This increased my distance 5-7 yards a club and improved my ball striking 10X. The result was 2-3 stokes shaved off my average. My message is consider the length and the lie equally. Go to a retailer and demo some shorter irons and see what your lie turns out to be.

Good luck my friend I hope it helps. If you need additional help just send me an email.
